Attacking Overloads

Set Up

  • N/A
  • 60 X 40 yards
  • 4 + 2 GKs
  • Footballs, cones, bibs,  mini goals

Objectives

  • Improve team's ability to attack with a numbers advantage.
  • Recognise how and when to exploit overloads.
  • Improve 1v1, combination play and finishing in the final third.

Details

  • 40 x 30 yard pitch with two goals + 2 goalkeepers at each end
  • Mark out a halfway line and the coach positions themselves there
  • Teams start in opposite corners and one team starts with the balls (attackers)
  • The coach calls out a number, for example ‘2’. The attacking team then sends out that number of players (in this example ‘2’)
  • The defending tea, sends out 1 less defender than the attacking team (1 defender in this example)
  • The attackers try to score in the goal and must be over the halfway line. If the defender wins the ball, they try to counter attack the opposite way
  • When a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play, the attack is over and the players return to their teams. The game restarts when the coach calls out another number.

Alterations

  • Time limit to score a goal (7 seconds)
  • Even numbers or defensive overload to increase difficulty

Coaching Points

  • Positive mindset to attack at speed.
  • Quality movement to create space and isolate defenders.
  • 1v1, Combination and Finishing skills.
  • Transition quickly on turnovers
